Conroe is a charming south eastern Texas city nestled in the beautiful Piney Woods. There is a great mixture of the friendly southern hospitality and the big Texas city. Just 40 miles north of Houston, you have direct access to one of the world’s most diverse metropolitan cities.
Economy
The city originally gained wealth due to the lumber and oil industries. During the 1930s, due to the oil profits, Conroe boasted more millionaires per capita than any other US city. The estimated median household income in 2009 was $43,897. The top three employers in the City’s 2009 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report were Conroe Independent School District with 5,7000, Montgomery county with 1,946 employees, National Oilwell Varco/Texas Oil Tools/Reed Hycalog with 1,145 employees.
Education
The city is served by the Lone Star College System primarily by the Lone Star College-Montgomery Campus and LSC University Center. Almost all areas of Conroe are within the Conroe Independent School District though a small northern section of Conroe is within the Willis Independent School District. There are two private schools; Covenant Christian School and Lifestyle Christian School.
Entertainment
Conroe is 7 miles southeast of Lake Conroe. Elvis Presley and Los Tigres del Norte have both performed at different locations in Conroe. There are plenty of activities to engage in around Conroe Texas. Tee up at one of it’s many golf courses, enjoy the Sam Houston National Forest and the W. Goodrich Jones State Forest. Conroe has entertainment in food, outdoor activities, arts and culture, plays, music, and much more!
History
Conroe’s downtown business district began to develop in the 1890′s. It was a town of lumber, timber, oil, and gas. In the early 1900′s Conroe survived two devastating fires. Conroe was incorporated as a city & named after Issac Conroe in 1904. In the 1930′s it received it’s first red light in downtown Conroe and the current courthouse was constructed. Conroe has developed from being a semi-rural town north of Houston to a hotspot for construction of new houses and economical development.
Weather
Conroe weather is at its best in the spring and fall. There are many days throughout the year with the warm Texas sunshine. If you love rain then you will love the rain in Conroe! It rains “cats and dogs” during the early spring months but the rain is warm and enjoyable. Conroe doesn’t experience much wind or snowfall so it is an ideal place of residency for those who enjoy the heat and sunshine!
